What an optometrist does

An optometrist is a primary eye care professional with a doctorate in optometry. In Québec, optometrists are licensed by the Ordre des optométristes du Québec. An optometrist examines your eyes, measures your vision, prescribes glasses and contact lenses, detects and monitors eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, treats certain eye conditions, and refers you to a specialist when you need one.

Optometrist, optician or ophthalmologist?

• Optometrist. Your first stop for an eye exam, a prescription, or any concern about your vision or eye health.
• Optician. A professional who fills the prescription: selecting, fitting and adjusting glasses and contact lenses. An optician does not perform eye exams.
• Ophthalmologist. A medical doctor and surgeon who treats eye disease and performs surgery, such as cataract surgery. You usually see an ophthalmologist on referral from an optometrist or a physician.

If you are not sure who to see, start with an optometrist. Most vision problems and many eye conditions are handled in the optometry clinic, and we arrange the referral when a specialist is needed.

When to see an optometrist

• It has been two years since your last eye exam, or one year for a child or an adult over 65
• Your vision has changed, at distance, up close or at night
• You have headaches, eye strain or tired eyes at the screen
• Your eyes are dry, red, itchy or watery
• You have diabetes, high eye pressure or a family history of glaucoma
• You want contact lenses, or your contact lens prescription has expired
• You need a vision form for the SAAQ

Coverage

RAMQ covers one complete eye exam a year for people under 18 and for people 65 and over. For adults 18 to 64, the exam is usually covered by private insurance, and we bill most major insurers directly. We also see patients covered by the Interim Federal Health Program.
