When should i get an Eye Exam ?
- Regular eye exams are crucial for maintaining a current prescription and detecting early signs of eye disease. Adults should have their eyes examined to keep their vision sharp and healthy.
- For children, eye exams are essential to ensure proper vision development and academic success. It is recommended that children have their first eye exam at 6 months of age and continue with annual check-ups thereafter.
- We recommend an annual comprehensive eye exam for all patients to ensure optimal vision and eye health. These exams, conducted by qualified optometrists, can help detect & prevent signs of eye disease.
Will my eye exam be covered by the RAMQ
- For children and young adults up to age 18, RAMQ covers one comprehensive eye exam per year.
- Adults aged 18-64 are only covered for annual eye exams if they have certain medical conditions.
- For people aged 65 and over, RAMQ insures one eye exam annually.
Will wearing eyeglasses make my eyes worse?
Contrary to popular belief, wearing glasses will not worsen your vision.
Glasses correct the direction of light rays to ensure they land correctly on the retina.
Blurry vision occurs when these rays focus too far in front of (myopia) or behind (hyperopia) the retina.
Natural changes in adult vision are common, but wearing glasses has no adverse effect on these changes.
There is a family history of eye diseases in my family, how will i know if i have some too ?
Many eye diseases start silently, with no noticeable symptoms. Early detection through routine eye exams can lead to better long-term outcomes.
Regular check-ups are the best way to monitor for any signs & prevent hereditary eye diseases.
Why does the eye doctor put drops in my eyes ?
Dilation drops are used during an eye exam to open up the pupils, allowing the optometrist to get a clear view of the structures in the back of the eye, including the optic nerve, macula, and peripheral retina.
These drops can cause temporary blurred vision and increased light sensitivity for a few hours. While most patients can drive home after their appointment, those who feel uncomfortable may want to arrange for a driver.
