Coverage and insurance

Is your eye exam covered?

Is my eye exam covered by RAMQ?

RAMQ covers one complete eye exam a year if you are under 18 or 65 and over. It also covers one exam every two years for adults 18 to 64 who have been in a financial assistance program with a claim slip for at least 12 months, and exams for people with a recognized visual impairment. An emergency exam for a sudden eye problem is covered for everyone. Bring your valid health insurance card. Some additional tests, such as retinal photos, are not covered by RAMQ. If you are between 18 and 64, your eye exam starts at $125 and is usually covered by private insurance instead.

Do you bill my insurance directly?

Yes. We bill most major insurers directly, so you pay only what your plan does not cover. Coverage varies from plan to plan, so check your vision care amount with your insurer before your visit.

Which insurance companies can you claim for?

We can submit your claim for many insurers, including Sun Life, Blue Cross, Manulife, Canada Life, Desjardins, GreenShield, Beneva, SSQ and RBC Insurance. We cannot see what your plan covers, so you are responsible for paying for the services if your plan turns out not to cover them. The full list is on our coverage page.

Can you fill out my SAAQ vision form?

Yes. We do the vision test and complete the SAAQ form for a driver's licence application or renewal during your visit.

Age, private insurance, emergencies, SAAQ and glasses: it is all explained on our page Who pays for your eye exam?

Book your eye exam

How long does an eye exam take?

At PrimeVision, a complete eye exam is booked as a 30-minute appointment. That time covers your history, the vision tests, the eye health exam with digital retinal imaging, and your optometrist's explanation of the results. Plan extra time if you also want to choose new frames with our optician after the exam. Some additional tests, such as OCT imaging, can add time: your optometrist tells you if you need them.

By age

How often should you have an eye exam at each age?

Children and teens

We examine children from age 4. Children seldom complain that they see poorly, even when the classroom board is blurry. A yearly exam follows how their vision develops and catches early what can get in the way of reading. RAMQ covers one complete exam a year before 18. If your child's myopia is progressing, we talk it through with you and offer myopia control when it fits. See also our children's eye exams.

Adults 18 to 64

An exam every two years suits most adults. Come back sooner if you squint to read, if your eyes burn after a day at the screen, or if your night vision behind the wheel is slipping. These symptoms often have a simple answer: a new prescription, lenses suited to screen work, or dry eye care. The exam is usually covered by private insurance, which we bill directly.

65 and over

With age, glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration become more common, and several start with no symptoms at all. RAMQ covers one complete exam a year from 65. We compare your retinal images from one year to the next and add OCT imaging and visual field testing when needed. If specialized follow-up is required, we refer you to an ophthalmologist. Optometrist, optician or ophthalmologist? Our eye doctor in Montréal page explains each role.

Contact lens wearers

A contact lens prescription is valid for one year. The yearly exam checks that the cornea stays healthy under the lens and that the lens is still the right one. Want to try contact lenses for the first time? We do contact lens fittings with trial lenses and follow-up.

What if you have an urgent eye problem?

A red, painful or suddenly blurry eye should be checked without delay. Our optometrists see urgent eye problems during opening hours: call 514-827-7463 first, and we will tell you how soon we can see you. A sudden loss of vision, a curtain or shadow across your vision, a chemical splash or an object in the eye needs a hospital emergency room right away. All the details are on our urgent eye care page.

Who examines your eyes

Your exam is done by one of our optometrists, all members of the Ordre des optométristes du Québec. If you choose new glasses, our optician, Michel Geha, O.O.D., takes your measurements and fits your frames on site. The whole team is introduced on our team page.

What to bring

Your valid health insurance card, your current glasses, your contact lenses or their boxes if you wear them, any previous prescription, and your private insurance information. For a driver's licence, also bring the form the SAAQ sent you (see our SAAQ vision exam page). A red or painful eye? Call us before you come and read our urgent eye care page.

Common questions

Eye exam questions, answered.

How often should I have an eye exam?

Adults should have an eye exam every two years, and children every year, since their vision changes quickly and they rarely complain when it does. We see children from age 4. From age 65, RAMQ covers one eye exam a year.

Is my child's eye exam covered?

Yes. We examine children from age 4, and RAMQ covers one complete eye exam a year for children under 18. RAMQ also offers a reimbursement toward glasses or contact lenses bought for a child under 18.

Do I need an appointment?

Can I get an eye exam without an appointment?

Booking online confirms your time instantly. Walk-ins are welcome when there is availability: call 514-827-7463 to check.

Where is the clinic?

PrimeVision is at 9520 Bd de l'Acadie, Suite 222, Montréal, in Ahuntsic-Cartierville near Marché Central. We are open Monday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Do you do eye exams in English and in French?

Yes. Our three optometrists see adults and children from age 4, in English and in French.

Can I get my glasses at the clinic after the exam?

Yes. After your exam, our optician, Michel Geha, O.O.D., helps you choose frames from our designer eyewear boutique, takes your measurements and fits your glasses in the clinic. Single vision lenses are edged in our on-site lab.

How much does an eye exam cost?

For adults 18 to 64, the complete eye exam is $125 (regular price, 30 minutes). That price includes the vision and prescription tests, a health assessment of both retinas and the OCT scan. It is often reimbursed by private insurance, which we bill directly. For patients under 18 and 65 and over, the exam is covered by RAMQ with a valid health insurance card.

Is an eye test the same as an eye exam?

Many people say "eye test" when they mean an eye exam. At PrimeVision, that appointment is a complete eye exam with an optometrist: we measure your vision and prescription, check eye pressure and examine the front and back of the eye. A quick vision check, such as a school screening or an online test, only measures how well you see. The American Optometric Association notes it can't be relied on to give the same results as a comprehensive exam.

After your exam, find your frames.

Go straight from your prescription to our designer eyewear boutique, in clinic or online, with lenses crafted to your exact results.
