From your prescription to your glasses

Your prescription. Have an eye exam in Montréal with one of our optometrists, or bring a valid prescription.
Your frame. Our team helps you choose a frame that suits your face, your prescription and how you live. Strong prescriptions and progressive lenses work better in some shapes than others, and we will tell you which.
Your measurements. We measure how the frame sits on your face so that the optical centre of each lens lines up with your eye. This step matters most for progressive lenses and for myopia control lenses.
Your lenses. Single vision lenses are edged and mounted to your prescription in our on-site lab. Progressive and other specialty lenses are ordered from the lens laboratory. Every pair is checked before we hand it over.
Your fitting. We adjust the glasses on your face when you pick them up, and again whenever you need it.

Choosing a frame with the optician

Our optician, Michel Geha, O.O.D., and the boutique team look at your prescription before suggesting frames. A strong prescription is often more comfortable in a smaller frame, which keeps the lens edges thinner, while progressive lenses need enough lens height for the reading zone. Pupillary distance and fitting height

Pupillary distance (PD) is the distance between the centres of your pupils. Fitting height is the vertical position of your pupil in the frame you chose. Both are taken with the frame adjusted on your face, because they depend on how that particular frame sits. With progressive lenses, an accurate fitting height places the distance, intermediate and reading zones where your eyes naturally look.

Pickup, fitting and adjustment

When your glasses are ready, we check them against your prescription, then adjust the temples, nose pads and frame angle so they sit straight and stay in place. Choosing your lenses

Office lenses

Office lenses, sometimes called computer lenses, are designed for intermediate and near distances, such as a screen and the papers on your desk. They give a wider view at those distances than standard progressive lenses, but they are not meant for driving or seeing far away.

Photochromic and polarized lenses

Photochromic lenses darken in ultraviolet light and clear indoors. Most darken less inside a car, because the windshield blocks much of the ultraviolet light that activates them. Polarized sunglass lenses reduce glare reflected from water, snow and wet roads. Our articles on transition lenses and tinted lenses explain these options in more detail.

Thin high-index lenses

High-index materials bend light more strongly, so a lens can be thinner and lighter for the same prescription. The difference is most noticeable with stronger prescriptions.

Blue-light filtering lenses

Blue-light filtering lenses are widely marketed for screen use, but the evidence that they reduce eye strain or protect eye health is limited, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Bringing a prescription from another clinic

You are welcome to bring a prescription written by another optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Bring the written prescription and, if possible, the glasses you wear now. Our optician checks that the prescription is complete before ordering lenses. If it is missing information needed for the lenses you want, such as the reading addition for progressive lenses, or if it is out of date, we will tell you, and you can book an eye exam with our optometrists.

Children's glasses

Children's frames need to be sturdy, light and properly sized, with nose pads and temples that keep the lenses centred while the child plays and moves. Impact-resistant lens materials are often recommended for children. We adjust the frame as your child grows. For children whose myopia is increasing, ask about myopia control lenses. Adjustments and repairs

Glasses that slide, pinch or sit crooked can usually be adjusted quickly. Adjustments, fittings and minor repairs are done in boutique for eyewear bought from us. Walk-ins are welcome when there is availability.

Insurance

Most private insurance plans cover part of the cost of prescription glasses every one or two years. We bill most major insurers directly, so you pay only the difference. RAMQ offers a reimbursement toward glasses bought for a child under 18.

Common questions

Do I need an eye exam before buying glasses?

You need a valid prescription. If you have a recent one from another clinic, bring it. If you do not have one, or it is out of date, our optometrists can examine your eyes here, and you can choose your frame during the same visit.

Can I order glasses with a prescription from another clinic?

Yes. Bring your written prescription from another optometrist or an ophthalmologist. Our optician checks that it is complete for the lenses you choose, then helps you select a frame and takes your measurements.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an optician?

The optometrist examines your eyes and writes your prescription. The optician helps you choose frames and lenses, takes measurements such as pupillary distance and fitting height, and fits and adjusts your glasses.

Do blue-light glasses help with screen use?

The evidence that blue-light filtering lenses reduce eye strain is limited. A prescription suited to your computer distance, an anti-reflective coating and regular breaks may help. Your optometrist can advise you.

Can I get prescription sunglasses?

Yes. We fit prescription sunglasses, including polarized lenses, and the optician can tell you which frames suit your prescription. Photochromic lenses are another option if you want one pair for indoors and outdoors.
