Essilor lenses in Montréal

PrimeVision, an optometry clinic and eyewear store at 9520 Boulevard de l'Acadie in Montréal, is an authorized Essilor lens dealer and holds the Essilor Experts Gold designation. Our optician picks the Essilor lens that suits your prescription, your frame and how you use your eyes during the day, then takes the measurements the lab needs to make it.

Where Essilor comes from

Essilor's story starts in Paris in 1849, with a cooperative of eyewear craftsmen that became the Société des Lunetiers. It was renamed Essel in 1962 and gave birth to Essilor in 1972. The turning point came in 1959: engineer Bernard Maitenaz developed the Varilux lens, a "continuously variable focus" lens to correct presbyopia. Essilor is now part of the EssilorLuxottica group.

Essilor lens families

  • Varilux: progressive lenses for people aged 40 and over, designed for shifting from distance to near vision. Our progressive glasses guide explains how they work.
  • Eyezen: single vision lenses designed for a connected life, when your eyes spend long hours on screens. See also our article on computer glasses.
  • Crizal: anti-reflective coatings. Our article on anti-reflective coating explains what you notice day to day.
  • Transitions: lenses that darken outdoors and turn clear again indoors. See the pros and cons of Transitions lenses.
  • Stellest: lenses for managing myopia in children. We fit Stellest lenses; our myopia control page explains the process.

What Essilor Experts Gold means

Essilor Experts is Essilor's program for eye care professionals who advise on and fit its lenses. PrimeVision holds the Gold designation. For you, it means a team that knows the Essilor range and orders through the maker's authorized network.

How we choose and fit an Essilor lens

It starts with your prescription and your day: driving, reading, screens, close work. For a progressive lens, the optician measures each eye's pupillary distance with a pupillometer and the fitting height with a ruler, then checks that the frame is tall enough for the reading zone. Next comes the material: a high-index lens keeps the edges thinner when the prescription is strong (our article on lens materials compares the options). At pickup, the optician adjusts the frame to your face, and you can come back for an adjustment later. If these are your first progressives, read how long getting used to them takes.

Questions about Essilor lenses

Can Essilor lenses go in any frame?

Yes, in most cases, whether you choose the frame here or bring your own in good condition. The optician checks size and shape first: a very small or strongly curved frame limits some progressive lenses.

Do I need an eye exam before ordering?

You need an up-to-date prescription. If yours is more than a year or two old, or your vision has changed, book an eye exam first. See also our prescription glasses in Montréal and our progressive, Transitions and blue light lenses page.

Where does technology come in?
